What's in a Domain Name?

Where Have All the Poor Words Gone?
Ok, Desperate times call for desperate measures, I realize this. In fact, the looming desperation of financial difficulty led me on an interesting search this morning. I determined purchasing a domain name like www.poor.com could enable me to put forth a writer's plea, not so much for cash (although there would be no complaints there), but for traffic and the possibility of a purchase of products from my sites like ClearView Press Inc.
I noted with only slight disdain at www.poor.com's unavailability. Then I try 'broke.com', - same result. I try "destitute" and it appears someone else is thinking along the same line. Then I look up meager, penniless (then pennyless, knowing many out there can't spell their way out of kindergarten) and meager. All taken.
Time to hit the thesaurus. I try indigent, impoverished, insolvent, hardup, onthebreadline and anything else my handy dandy computer friend will suggest. Taken. Then the coup d'etat - "impecunious". Why would ANYONE buy www.impecunious.com?
Ok, ok, I'da bought it. Yep. I would have made that purchase and I would educate people on the definition of impecunious (lacking money). I may have even made a little money while I was at it too. But NOOO! Someone beat me to it.
Losing out to someone who grabbed an idea before me is nothing new. In fact, it normally is not enough to make me stir in my seat. The problem with all these 'poor' sites is that none of them are developed. They don't even have an "Under Construction" tag on a temporary webpage.
I'm sitting here wondering why anyone would buy up all this junk only to let it lie dormant. I bet they're waiting on some poor sap like me to come along and offer them money for the domain. That would be something poetic, wouldn't it? Me paying money to become poor - or poor.com that is.
Then the thought struck me, isn't that how I got here in the first place? Buying up domains, spending my time behind a keyboard scratching out a living instead of doing the nose-to-the-corporate-stone thing? P
Pride screams at me to take a step-back-and-no-one-gets-taken approach. Let this 'poor sod' have his (or her) mental holiday believing crazed and nearly destitute writers like me will pony up on their pre-brilliance. (It's pre-brilliant because when I thought this up it was brilliant, right?).
I could go out and track down through Whois the dirty scummy-word sucking jerk who stole my idea before I had it, but then I'd be rolling down that rabid-trail that leads to more dementia and lost income. No, I would not give them the satisfaction of my search or time, but then my mind latches on to the possibility that this person may truly be so poor as to not be able to do anything with his/her less than meager money situation.
Maybe the idea fizzled out because of an impecunious state of affairs (yes, the word is an adjective) and they are at this moment giving blood to raise enough capital to build their poor site.
Truth, of course, lends itself to the very real probability that someone with money grabbed them all and is waiting for times to get so desperate people will pay anything for "desperation". Hey, I didn't try that one! Hold on, I'll be right back...
So I knew before I keyed it the domain was taken. I even went to www.desperation.com and got that annoying faux page that experience says the domain is purchased and lying dormant. How could someone let "desperation" sit without acting on it? Isn't that the nature of the word?
Desperation. I'm sorry, this word screams ACTION! Since we are a nation of stupid laws multiplying and propagating themselves into more-stupid laws, I propose anyone not using a domain like desperation.com be taken out, publicly ridiculed and cajoled into giving the site to the most appropriate person they can find. In this case, someone like me who is desperate to find an online income.
On a side note, I checked out another domain name I've wanted for a few years - relationshits.com. Up until now I always received the dormant stare of complacency from my screen. Today, just now as a matter of fact, I went to the supposed site and what did I find?
The word "Test". This could be a poetic statement on relationshits. Think about it. If you test first, you won't enter that realm, thus directing your life down rosier paths. Unfortunately I know this is no high-browed attempt to direct people to research and learn about someone before they leap into a (or another) relationshit. This is simply someone who has no clue what they're doing wasting another great domain name.
A rant on domains was not on the agenda today. Once again I've traveled down the road less monetized and followed my heart and passion. I have two books to upload to the greed-mongers at Amazon (Kindle) and I am forced to face the fact that my procrastination is due to the teeth-mulching act of giving up 65% of some writer's labor to a mega-corp that is simply selling the electrons because they had the bucks to develop and market a delivery system.
I'm sure this is leading to a rant for another day about how simply selling electrons and fleecing the publishers/writers for 65% should be grass-rooted out of existence. It's not like they aren't covering their cost on the Kindle buy charging nearly $200. They have to steal the writer's money or force the small press competition out.
Oh, I've written a Hub like that already? Check out my Hub on Corporate Bullies. I have volumes more to say about them so I'm sure a book is in order. See how this hub, "What's in a Domain Name?" took me down a writer's path? Hmm. Distraction. Loads and loads of distraction. I wonder if that dot com is taken... I still wish whomever had saved at least one 'poor' name for me.
Impecunious. You've got to be kidding me...

Michael. This really made me laugh! Not that I want you to lose money to Amazon! But the idea of searching for domain names and they are always taken! I have had friends over and we all play the game, "who can find a domain that is not taken?" AND it is not easy!!!!! ha...has brought hours of entertainment!
I myself have been offered money for one of my domains before....So, people can make money by buying and selling them. But the whole idea is funny! Anyway, enjoyed this!

Lol - but you must have learned a lot during your domain availability searches - you could join these people you "loathe" and also buy and sell domain names for some extra cash...
Google Adwords Keyword Tool is great for looking for what people are searching for, and gives a list of similar keywords and how many people are searching for them. Also gives how much competition there is for the same keywords. I would suggest looking at your ClearView Press Inc site and coming up with similar and helpful keywords related to that main site, then developing micro niche sites using suitable and available domain names, to link back to the main site. Sometimes only the .com is taken, and not the .net too.
Thanks for the reply on the comments I left. Glad you found my tips on this hub useful. Now, if you combine your Google Adwords Keyword Tool usage with the tools on Keyword Spy you'll get to see who's paying what for PPC ads (whether you want to use PPC or not) to get a further idea of your competition, and of which keywords could work best for you (or which keywords would have you working really hard to try and compete against.)
I have a plain Jane name that many other women also have which is why I settled on Pamela N Red. Google it and you will only find me...so far.
I already have.
